Are there any free modeling programs out there that are compatible with warcraft? And with tutorials to boot?
I got milkshape but that was timed, not to mention it only seemed compatble with half life models and wouldn't accept warcraft ones.

Almost every modelling program is compatible with Wc3.... its called plug-ins.
I think 3D studio max is the most compatible.
And no, there aren't any good free modelling programs either. Tutorials don't help much.. modelling takes months to learn.

Well I managed to grab Gmax, and a tutorial for it, I've got the basics down. But now I got a problem with geomerging, there's only the dex exporter script for gmax, and I can't find any way of converting warcraft models into a gmax editable format :/

Go download the Wc3 Art Tools on the blizzard website. It has a .mdx exporter to export .mdx files using the MAXScript that both Gmax and 3ds max use.

Open up the model in notepad and see what skins are attached to it. If theres a skin with a custom path, you'll need to that skin with the same path.

Darn, I still can't get it to work...mayhaps a pro mapper will come to me and give me instructions that aren't so complicatedly simple. I have no common sense. Thanks much anyways. Maybe this will help you out a bit. 1.)Extract the zip file into your WC3 directory. 2.)Now you open your map in World Editor and go to the Import Manager (F12 key). There you import all files from the zip file. 3.)The imported files all show a path like "war3mapImported\yourmodel.blp". You will need to adjust all the path names. 4.)Your main model file is the "Yourmodel.mdx". This model does'nt need a specific path, so you can leave it the way it is, which would be "war3mapImported\yourmodel.mdx". 5.)To edit a path of an imported file you double click it and then check the "Use custom path" checkbox. Then enter the correct path. Which would be whatever folders you saved the files into: EX: Model\newmodel\yourmodel.blp 6.) Change the paths for all the files now, use your new folder name for all the files for your model, which in this case would be "Model\newmodel\yourmodel.blp and Model\newmodel\yourmodel.mdx" and etc. 7.)The World Editor wont recognize your model until you save your map first, quit and reload editor. 8.)Now you can assign the new model to a unit in the object editor. Ex: a Peasant model or peon. Click on the import option and click ok. If you followed all these directions correctly you should be staring at your new custom model on your desired map.

You just copy, pasted, and edited one of the tutorials I've already done. Most of the models I dl have specific paths, so they won't REPLACE a model(like how Broly replaces Illidan, and how Super/Kid Buu replace Demon Hunters). I just can't figure out how to work the paths. It gave me a path that makes no sense whatsoever.

All you have to do is change the path to the one you put your model into...if you already read this tutorial than you should have no problem. For your model you can use ANY unit on the map editor and use the import custom option over it. -All-you-have-to-do-is-make-a-new-folder-with-your-models/skins-in-it- then-change-the-paths-to-fit-that-folder.

Models don't have to have any path name at all. They have on requirements at all for path names other than their filename. You don't have to put them in any folder, you don't have to do anything other than import them, and they will work regardless.
Skins are another story. They have to be imported into the filepath specified in the .mdl model file.
